Top Down Sprite Maker v1.1.0 | New sprite style, new build pipeline + more

Hey everyone!

I know I said on Reddit that this update would be out a couple weeks ago, so thanks for bearing with me. One of the reasons it was delayed was because my new laptop arrived early, so it took me a couple days to get my development environment fully set up on the new machine.

New build pipeline

It’s a lot beefier than my old laptop, so I also decided now was the right time to reevaluate my build pipeline. Unlike v1.0.0, which only has dedicated binaries for Windows, v1.1.0 has dedicated binaries for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The builds are also significantly smaller due to packaging a custom Java runtime that only contains the modules used by the program, as opposed to the entire Java runtime.

IMPORTANT: Please let me know if you download v1.1.0 and cannot run the program.

Kyushu sprite style

The new sprite style in v1.1.0 is Kyushu, added by popular demand for Gen 3 Pokémon sprite support.

Other changes

Other changes include:

  • The Pokémon Gen 4 sprite style has been renamed to Hokkaido
  • Added settings for sprite styles, including:
    • Quantize to GBA colors
    • Warn and give option to replace colors if sprite sheet has more than 15 non-transparent colors

These settings were added with the GBA ROM hacking community in mind, and are meant to make it easier to configure sprites that comply with the Game Boy Advance’s hardware limitations.

One last thing

If you’ve already purchased the program and are getting a lot of use out of it, please consider leaving a rating.

Someone asked a question the other day about whether you could upload your own assets to TDSM. This is a planned feature, but it will take some time and input from users to get right. Because this person had impulsively bought the program thinking the feature was already implemented, they were upset that the feature did not exist yet and left a 1-star rating. This is the only rating TDSM has on Itch so far, which obviously isn’t a great look.

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing what you all think of the update!

It would be really interesting if you could do this with ManaSeed from Itch. I actually made my own version of ManaSeed for 8 way direction.

I’d have to talk to the creator of Mana Seed to get his approval to do something like that, which I’d be open to doing if there’s enough demand for it.
